John and Hannah Williams Thorpe
John Whittaker Thorpe was born 8 Nov 1832 in Middleton, Lancashire, England to Thomas and Nancy Whittaker Thorpe. His mother died when he was just ten years old. He accepted the gospel and was baptized 14 Jan 1850 at the age of 17.
Hannah Williams was born 9 Mar 1834 in Salford, Manchester, Lancashire, England to John and Elizabeth Johnson Williams. She was introduced to the church by missionaries and was baptized 20 Dec 1849 at the age of 15.
They were married 18 Sept 1853.
While in England, Hannah gave birth to one child, Emily. Together, John and Hannah decided to join the saints. They set sail for America, John arriving in 1855.
She traveled with her daughter on the ship, Emerald Isle, arriving in New York 29 Dec 1855. You can read more about their voyage HERE and HERE.
Their plan may have been to join the handcart Saints that year but Hannah was pregnant, or maybe all along they planned to stay in St. Louis to earn enough money to finish their journey, but whatever their reason they didn’t complete their journey for several years.
A son was born that year, Lorenzo. The next year, 1857, little Emily died at the age of 3. In 1859 a daughter, Sarah, was born and in 1860 they had another daughter, Genoa.
In 1860 the family started to head West, only to have disaster strike again. Their one-year-old, Sarah died, and the family returned to St. Louis. While there, their infant, Genoa, died, too.
In 1861 Hannah had another son, Thomas, and this year the family finally came West in the David H Cannon Company of 1861, leaving 1 Jun 1861 and arriving 11-16 Aug. 225 individuals and 57 wagons were in the company when it began its journey from the outfitting post at Florence, Nebraska (now Omaha).
John took two more wives in Utah. He married Mary Alice Walker on 18 Jan 1869. She bore him two children. He married Melina Jane Jones on 3 Apr 1884. They had one child.
Hannah died in Logan 17 Oct 1909 and was buried in the Wellsville Cemetery.
