Judd

Samuel Judd 1820-1869

Samuel JUDD was born in Cubbington, Warwickshire, England on 10 Jul 1820. He was the third child of Thomas JUDD and Mary DOWLER, who were both born and raised in Cubbington.
Catherine HINES was born in Manchester, or Birkenhead, Lancashire, England on 10 May 1821. She was the daughter of David HINES and Elizabeth LUNT. Catherine and Samuel JUDD were married on 18 Mar 1843.

Samuel joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 29 Oct 1847 and Catherine joined in Mar 1851. Samuel left his family in England to emigrate to the United States and Utah, planning to raise the funds for the rest of the family to emigrate. He, with the other passengers, was shipwrecked. He worked his way back to England, and again embarked. This time the ship was quarantined for yellow fever and the passengers were banished to an island. Again he worked his way back to England and suffered a severe illness. The third time he took passage on the ship "The John Boyd", which left Liverpool April 23, 1862, under the direction of James S. Brown. It arrived at New York June 1st. You can read more about the voyage HERE. He then traveled in the Joseph Horne Company of 1862 leaving on 27 July and arrived in the valley 1 Oct. 570 individuals and 52 wagons were in the company when it began its journey from the outfitting post at Florence, Nebraska (now Omaha).
He arrived in Salt Lake Valley in the fall of 1862 and immediately traveled to St. George where he went to work to buy passage for his family and to provide a home for their arrival.

Catherine, with their eight children arrived in Salt Lake City, October 4, 1864. Their first home in St. George was a dug-out, and they all worked very hard to help improve and maintain this home in a new country. Working in the excessive heat while standing in mud and water, making dams, adobes, bricks, etc., hastened Samuel's death, that occurred on April 19, 1869. He and his sons had helped build the St. George Temple, Tabernacle and Courthouse, by making all the bricks for these three buildings.

Their first home in St. George was a dug-out, and they all worked very hard to help improve and maintain this home in a new country. Working in the excessive heat while standing in mud and water, making dams, adobes, bricks, etc., hastened Samuel's death, that occurred on April 19, 1869.

Some time after the death of Samuel JUDD, his wife Catherine married John HYATT, and they moved to Glendale, Kane, Utah. Catherine HINES JUDD HYATT passed away 10 Aug 1897, in Kanab, Kane, Utah.
